Social Search Presents An Opportunity For Linkbuilding

Linkbuilding

As many people have, I have been toying around with Google’s new Social Search. As I forged my way through massive amounts of spam I begin to see a small light at the end of the tunnel. That light is the potential for inbound links.

There are some search terms out there that no matter how hard you try you most likely will never rank #1 in SERPs. If you really think you can beat out Best Buy and Sony for the term “electronics” then you need to walk yourself away from the computer now, write up a resignation letter for your current SEO position and apply for a PPC account management position where you can outbid your competition.

Now with social search in the fold, just because your website isn’t one of Google top 10 organic results does not mean you can’t grab a spot on the first page of SERPs. One way to make your presence felt on the first page of SERPs is to research key terms for your industry and imbed them within your social media status updates and blog posts. This can offer your website and social media profiles exposure that was not possible before social search was implemented. If it is a highly searched terms you brand name can become exposed to thousands of new people each day.

With this in mind, if you are producing quality content or providing a product customers need/want you can use this exposure to secure links to your website. If you are working your status updates, tweets and blog posts correctly you should be able to attract links with the proper anchor text you are targeting.

Per SEOMoz’s post on ranking factors, inbound links with proper anchor text are one of the most influential items search engines take into account for their rankings. If you utilize social search for link building you may be able to get your website some extra exposure and move up the rankings faster than anticipated.

The time spent atop social search results is still an unknown so keeping an eye on how long your links stay on the results page is something that will have to be monitored. You must also make sure that while you are imbedding these terms within your status updates and tweets you are not spamming and ruining your brand’s reputation. Make sure to use relevant keywords to the subjects you are posting about.
